Chapter 3: The Signal

A signal arrives. Outside the Enclave, the world is already in motion. Ehlana must decide whether to follow the script or step outside the light.

It began with a chime the Order never used. The door to the meditation chamber slid open and a messenger entered, her eyes burning with the kind of urgency the Enclave called uncontrolled.

“There is a signal from the Fringe,” she said. “It is not authorized. The Archive is asking for confirmation.”

Douglas frowned. “No unauthorized signal is to be attended without the Council,” he replied. Ehlana felt the sudden pull of the dark-room memory again, the phrase still ringing: “If you choose, do not choose for them.”

The signal could be a trap. It could also be the first honest thing the outside world had sent in days. In the corridor, the drones hummed a different tone than the calm lights. The Order's system had a place for every response. Ehlana began to wonder whether her own place was to hear the signal and not simply obey it.

Her pulse matched the blinking on the screen: UNAUTHORIZED OBSTRUCTION ACKNOWLEDGED. Somewhere beyond the Enclave’s walls, a faction refused to be processed. The Order wanted to bring it into protocol. The signal wanted to stay wild.

Douglas leaned close. “You are about to learn what the world expects of the signal,” he murmured. “If you carry it, you will be asked to confirm more than one story.”

Ehlana understood then that the real test was not the signal itself, but whether she would allow the Order to speak for it. The dark room memory felt less like an intrusion and more like an invitation: listen before you act, even when the system believes it has already decided.
