Chapter 1: The Call
The corridor smelled of stone and antiseptic. The ceiling lights pulsed with a slow breathing pattern that the Enclave called calm, though it did nothing to slow Ehlana’s pulse.
She had been told she would feel prepared. The file on her tablet listed every training module, the sequence of tutors, and the endorsements from the Order. It also contained a sentence she could not reconcile with the rest: “Ehlana, at fourteen, will inherit the signal.”
The first memory arrived in the quiet between roll call and the ethics lecture. It was not a memory of the walls or the lesson. It was the sensation of standing in a dark room and hearing a voice say, “If you choose, do not choose for them.”
She pressed her fingertips to the inside of her wrist. The pulse reader on the wall registered the flutter, but the automatic response came back unchanged: Everything is normal. Ehlana glanced at the screen and saw her name below the Order’s seal. That seal made a promise she did not yet know how to keep.
